The Happiest Illness

A friend’s wife was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis a few years ago. It’s a confusing illness. Some people live a completely normal life for years and years; others are left bedridden or worse.

My friend’s wife has had similar symptoms of lethargy which has robbed her of her reputation as life and soul of the party.

Now, however, that reputation may be restored. She has developed an odd symptom: fits of the giggles.

Yesterday, while I was at their home, she was noticeable by her absence. Actually, she was laughing so much she felt the need to retire to the garden so she could regain her composure. It took some time.

As symptoms of illness, it’s a doozy. It’s also not uncommon, I’m told.

They tell me it has made their social life difficult. Because the giggling is brought on by emotion — any emotion — it’s difficult to attend funerals, for instance.

Still, we all like a laugh.
